After a long day working in our nation's Capitol—or just touring the sights—a cocktail is definitely in order, and why settle for something ordinary?
A push away from conservative drink menus and an influx of young and creative professionals have increased both the number and quality of cocktail bars throughout the district. From a speakeasy to a multi-level saloon, these nine cocktail bars cover some of D.C.'s best offerings—and yes, mocktails too.

1705 14th St. NW / Website
Jane Jane is homy in the best way possible. The 850-square-foot space is covered in plaid mosaic tile, printed wallpaper and honey-colored wood. The menu features comical drink names; case in point the “Tears at an Orgy" with brandy, orange, maraschino, simple syrup, angostura and Sprite; or the “Pink Corvair” with vodka, curaçao, lemon juice and grenadine. We also recommend the lesser known classics Corpse Reviver #2 made with gin, lemon juice, curaçao, cocchi Americano and absinthe; or the Pegu Club with gin, lime, curaçao, angostura and orange bitters.

This M Street bar has an impressive farm-to-table food menu to accompany its delicately-mixed drinks. Boasting meticulous service and vibrantly-colored drinks, guests rarely leave without a smile (and some great IG pics). Branch out with ingredients like popcorn-washed reposado tequila and butterfly-pea flower tea vermouth.

Located inside La Cosecha Market in Union Market District, Serenata serves generously-sized, Latin-inspired cocktails. The selection constantly changes, so no two visits are guaranteed to be the same!

Tucked into Blagden Alley, this bar features multiple main spaces, each with its own ambiance. Curl up in spirits library's cozy and intimate indoor setting, or live a little in the punch garden that's thoughtfully sprinkled with plants to offer a convivial and open-air rooftop vibe.

If you enjoy whiskey, this is the place for you. Jack Rose Dining Saloon boasts an impressive 53-page whiskey book with something to please every spirit lover’s taste. Five rooms, including a tiki bar and a privatisable cellar, are spread throughout three floors. It's an adventure worth tasting.

This Dupont establishment’s relaxed atmosphere has made it a go-to place for drinks. Enjoy cocktails from a rotating seasonal menu, or order from an array of bottled classics that can serve up to five. Accompany your drinks with avocado cicchetti, blistered shishitos or other small plates from Residents' diverse dinner menu.

Morris’ baby blue interior is reminiscent of a Wes Anderson movie, and the staff is eager to make your perfect drink. Bartenders take cocktails very seriously here: from hand-carved ice to the temperature of the glassware, no detail is overlooked. Not a big drinker? Enjoy the carefully-crafted low abv and spirit-free menu.
3165 Mt. Pleasant St. NW / Website
Located above a dentist’s office, this moody Mount Pleasant speakeasy has first-come, first-serve seating and a handwritten menu. Fruit is juiced right at the bar, and ice is freshly made every day. Skilled bartenders are on hand, dressed in classic vests and all, to make you the best drink you'll have all week.

This new, reservations-only gin bar is a welcome addition to Capitol Hill. The menu revolves exclusively around gin and changes seasonally. Beautiful cocktails are adorned with edible flowers and fresh berries, and caviar and chips are a welcome snack pairing.
