The first scoop shop of its kind to open in the D.C. area is Columbus, Ohio import Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Settling into the bustling 14th and U corridor last year, the store started churning out its delicious and often unexpected flavors. Chocoholics will adore “Roxbury Road,” a play on the traditional Rocky Road, made with a swirl of sweet caramel sauce. Owner Victoria started her scoops shop to share her passion for ice cream and to make others as happy as ice cream makes her. Ice Cream Jubilee’s treats are made in small batches from a local creamery. For those with dietary restrictions, most flavors are gluten-free and don’t contain nuts. Some of their best flavors are featured in the summer, like a luscious banana bourbon caramel, refreshing minty chip and tart strawberry trés leches. Visit Milk Bar’s CityCenterDC or Wharf locations for their cereal milk soft serve. Served with crushed cornflakes and made with milk, brown sugar and a pinch of salt, it tastes just like the milk at the bottom of a bowl of cereal. Those who prefer not terribly sweet desserts will love the slightly salty taste. Those from the Midwest who miss Graeter’s ice cream will adore this shop in Bethesda. Serving up cookies, cakes and chocolates, Henry’s secret weapon is its ice cream. If you want a truly decadent dessert, try the “Granddaddy,” a brownie topped with raspberry chocolate chip ice cream, hot fudge and chocolate whipped cream. For something a little less indulgent, there’s a lovely seasonal parfait. Worth a trip up the Red Line to the new Pike & Rose development, the Baked Bear opened May 19th. Marking its first East Coast location, the ice cream shop serves gigantic globs of ice cream in between freshly baked pastries. Guests can mix and match cookies, brownies or doughnuts for their base for a completely customizable experience.
