Think tank, intellectual forum, incubator for emerging talent—Pum Lefebure tells us about At Yolk, her dream vehicle to amplify the Washington creative class.
Why open a space like At Yolk? PUM LEFEBURE: The main reason was out of necessity. Over the past 15 years at Design Army, we have produced a ton of custom photo and video shoots. When we needed to shoot in a studio, it started to get expensive. After we opened, we found there was quite a lot of demand for a larger creative space, so on days we’re not shooting we rent it out.
Are there other spaces in DC like this? PL: There are quite a few, but most are smaller or don’t have easy access. We intentionally looked just outside of DC where we could find an affordable space, and it had to be at least 10,000 square feet. It took us almost two years. We have always been pioneers when it comes to real estate—we are counting on the Cheverly/Hyattsville area to change just like H Street NE has in the 10 years since we moved Design Army there.
What’s your goal? PL: To be an anchor for the creative community. Currently, we are planning out a series of ‘master classes’ and pondering the idea of a creative magazine that would feature people who use the space. We see it as a place for creatives to come together and learn from one another.
Tell me about the interior. PL: We wanted a space that was super clean and modern and would make you stop and stare. Division 1 was the architect for both the exterior and interiors. They were our first call.
Plans for more spaces? PL: No immediate plans, but never say never as we are always planning and dreaming. Maybe our next project will be something near the beach.
