Christine Marcus blends catering, community and corporate culture into a one-of-a-kind delicious feast.
Alchemista founder Christine Marcus is changing the way top companies dine in, one gourmet meal at a time.
What do a tasteless turkey sandwich, an MIT Sloane School project and corporate culture have in common? The answer is Christine Marcus. The former deputy chief financial officer at the U.S. Department of Energy is now a visionary in corporate culture, serving up more than 30,000 meals each month to clients like Draft Kings, Moderna Therapeutics and WeWork in both Boston and Washington, DC.
Alchemista, the Boston-based company founded by Marcus, began as a business school project at MIT Sloane School. Underwhelmed by the ho-hum meals (such as those tasteless turkey sandwiches) that were served as part of her fast-track program, she created a food service and catering model that optimized local restaurants such as Eastern Standard and Branch Line, enabling them to take a bite of the corporate catering pie without competing for lucrative contracts. “We aren’t simply a food delivery service,” says Marcus. “We are a partner in creating a strong corporate identity and culture.” In short, Alchemista provides a curated menu and experience in hopes of enriching the culture of our workplaces. As such, clients can expect sumptuous sushi spreads, pho bowls and chicken and waffles instead of the vending machine’s chips of the day.
“There’s nothing more powerful than breaking bread with someone,” says Marcus, who confesses that while she doesn’t cook, she excels in community gatherings. “Bringing people together through shared meals and shared culinary experiences is team building.”
