While most know Czech Ambassador Hynek Kmoníček for his work with foreign affairs, his official biography also notes his love for cooking ethnic cuisine and collecting the hottest sauces on the planet. Modern Luxury DC experienced Ambassador Kmoníček’s culinary talents first hand at an intimate dinner in the Ambassador’s home this past September.
The inspiration behind the menu was the First Family of President Donald Trump. The current First Lady is from a Central European territory, much like the Czech Republic. Ambassador Kmoníček created the dishes for the night for this special occasion, none of which has ever been cooked and served prior to the night.
The night began with a Bohemia Sekt, the Czech version of sparkling wine, in the Ambassador’s sitting room, where we had the opportunity to mingle with the Ambassador and his wife, Indira Gumarova.
Following a toast from the Ambassador, the main course was served in the dining room. A special edition of Slovenian chili rosé wine served by the spoon was the main drink of the evening.
The meal opened with a Czech duck kaldoun soup.
This was shortly followed by a lamb variation of Stroganoff served in a home-baked loaf of bread.
For dessert, guests enjoyed a Czech funeral combo—a biscotti usually served in the shape of a coffin with whipped cream and edible flowers—while sipping on a traditional Fernet drink.
We look forward to the next culinary endeavor Kmoníček takes outside of the political world. Find out more information on Ambassador Kmoníček at the Czech Republic Embassy website or his articles in magazines and newspapers throughout the world.
