In the 1700s, Scottish doctor George Cleghorn examined how quinine could be used to halt the illness. The quinine was consumed in tonic water; however, its bitter taste was unpleasant. As a result, British officers in India in the early 19th century added a mixture of water, sugar, lime and gin in order to make the drink more palatable—thus, gin and tonic was born.
